Building a garden space for a beginner

Our granddaughter is interested in gardening. She started off small last year with a stackable system we gave her to grow herbs. We enjoyed visiting Well-Sweep Herb Farm in Port Murray, NJ together and purchased many fine herbs as a result.

This year, she wanted a small garden area of her own, like the ones we have at our home. My husband created a 6 x 8 raised bed garden at our home and then we transported it to her yard. With help from our grandson, we were able to get it installed and filled it with soil and compost I had left from topping off my garden beds. B is so happy with the result and continues to report on how she is doing. She had also helped me start seedlings at home and was able to bring home her starts to plant.

Gardening is a great way to teach younger people on how food is grown, the concept of patience and perseverance, creating structure and routine since the garden needs to be cared for and (hopefully) being rewarded for one’s work. Even if plants fail, there is always a lesson to be learned from the garden. What was your first experience like in the garden? I’d like to know.
