It’s time to really get into planting the garden for the 2021 season. Last fall, John added an addition to my garden after I spent too many hours watching my favorite YouTubing Homesteaders. We added cattle panel and made a trellis in this new garden section.
Our garden has grown from one section to now three and a fourth (and last) section is underway. Because we have so many deer in our area, we have to enclose the entire structure. We try to recycle as much wood as we can, which is important this year due to the major increase in lumber costs. (See my post on building our granddaughter a small garden structure of her own.)
In last years addition, I already planted peas on the trellis that I started indoors. Next to the peas, I planted many type of leaf lettuce. 5 to be exact. I purchased my seed from both Johnny’s Seeds and Baker Creek. From Baker’s Creek, I received a free seed packet of red mustard greens and these are looking good! I planted a mixed loose leaf variety from Johnny’s, which are also doing fantastic. In fact, all the varieties are coming up. Of course, I have them all marked in the garden, but not on paper in the house.
This is my first full year of gardening in retirement. I must say that I am truly enjoying the ability to go down to the garden every day and see what is happening, weed, plant and dream. We are finishing up our last of the store bought romaine lettuce and since I have lettuce in the cold frame ready to eat, I am hoping that I will not have to buy any lettuce for a few months.
I’m looking forward to trying all of these varieties in the next few weeks!
